Dear subscribers
We are very nearly there. It’s almost the end of term. For most of us it will be just a matter of a few weeks, perhaps less, until another academic year is (thankfully as far as this one is concerned) behind us.
Bringing us up to the end of term, we have two remaining EDDitions, this week’s and our end of term ‘What Next For International Education?’ special (more detail below).
Today’s EDDi features two articles on the theme of school leadership, one an opinion piece and one a traditional EDDi digest.
Leadership in a Time of Crisis
International School Principals: Routes to headship and key challenges of their role
In the first piece, Dr Stephen Whitehead makes the case for leadership being the only route to addressing climate change - and that the leaders who are most likely to do that are the young people currently being educated in your classrooms.
The second piece is a digest of an excellent paper by Lucy Bailey and Mark Gibson on how international school leaders are prepared and trained for their roles. As the paper suggests:
“ Data [shows] that international schools lack a strong leadership pipeline that enables identification of early leadership potential and its cultivation throughout an individual’s career.”
We wonder for how many readers that sentiment resonates.
There is also a long read piece from Marvin Mansueto:
(English) Language Policy and Planning in South America: An Overview
Taking a slightly more academic tone, Marvin offers a deep dive into some of the fascinating challenges of teaching English in Paraguay. As ever, EDDi is delighted to support the work of emerging academic writers and commentators on international education, providing a platform for non-native speakers to share their voices.
And, before you jump into the articles, don’t forget that if you’d like your own voice to appear in EDDi, the last edition of this year will be a ‘What Next for International Education?’ special. More details here and below.
Enjoy the articles.

What Next For International Education?
We are looking for short snippets, quotes or extended musings (well, 500 word musings). You can choose to write about any topic you like and in any style. But, if you need some inspiration, we’d value your thoughts on:
In the immediate term, what might next year look like? Will learning continue to be on, off and blended?
What will the teacher recruitment situation look like?
Once countries are vaccinated, will the flood gates open with teachers rushing home (are we looking at year of broken contracts)?
What will happen to student numbers?
Will the market remain localised, overseas students either remaining locked-out of countries or reluctant to travel, preferring options closer to home?
Where will the growth markets be? Will there even be any growth markets?
What have we learnt or implemented over the last 12 months that education should keep?
We’d love to share the EDDi readerships view of ‘what next?’
Have your say via the submission form here.
