Dear subscribers
At what point in a new year does it stop being appropriate to wish people a happy one? We’ll assume you are reading this early enough that our wishes are not inappropriately late.
This week’s EDDi has a focus article on one ancient and prestigious school most definitely relieved to say farewell to 2020 - Eton College.
While descriptors such as ‘ancient’, ‘prestigious’, ‘elitist’, and ‘traditional’ might usually be applied to Eton, the term ‘progressive’ perhaps not. But all that changed when Eton suddenly found itself at the sharp end of the culture war between those who are labelled ‘woke’ and those who are, well, generally ignored or dismissed by those who are ‘woke’.
Will the long-term fallout see Eton becoming co-ed? Now wouldn’t that be something.

On a similar theme, we have another Guest Contribution by Dr Sadie Hollins, this time looking at the challenges for students of ‘coming out’. And, critically, of ‘coming out again and again’ as they move between international schools.
LGBT+ STUDENTS IN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS: THE COMPLEXITY OF ‘COMING OUT’
Finally, before you dig into those articles, a small challenge. If you have grabbed a copy of ‘International Schooling: The Teacher’s Guide’ (and, if not, why not?) we’d love to see a photograph of it somewhere representative of your location. For example, amongst others, it’s recently appeared in Thailand, Taipei and the Swiss Alps:
Send us a copy of your image (contact@eddi.ac) and we’ll feature it here and on our social media (and, of course, we will also tag your own social media channels).
Best wishes for a less eventual 2021 - though, if the first eight days are anything to go by, we are going to need every bit of the resilience we developed in 2020.
Happy reading
